Its a huge hull with a huge cabin. We took the boat out for a run but it would not go onto the plane. There is no RPM gauge to determine how its going. The mechanic jumped in and said the engine is running A1 and the carbies were good. He said the issue is with th propellor. It has a 21 pitch propeller which is too big. He recommended before we buy one to test out some smaller pitches starting with 17 and then 15 and see how it goes. It would not get up on the plane at all with the 21 pitch which is very odd for a motor the size of this. The outboard is apparently revving perfectly but boat is not moving quick enough to get onto the plane.
Need Tachometer Help. Lost
I finally broke down and order a new tach and then installed it today. The instillation was easy, but when I turned on the key, the hour meter reset to zero. Thankfully I looked at the hour meter right before I removed the gage, but I thought it would have automatically returned to the number of hours on the boat.

Try a new rectifier, that will make a tac act goofy! Ron V , I’ve got a 12 year old Faria tach in my boat and everytime it starts drifting and jumping I reach under the dash and wiggle the posts until it stops. Steve Jameson Try a new rectifier, that will make a tac act goofy! Where is the rectifier located and could it also cause my fuel guage to act up. Thanks, Steve Jameson , Where would I find the rectifier on my motor and could the rectifier also cause the fuel guage to act up.
Thanks, gambling , Bad connections seems to be your problem. But, do not discharge the probabilty to have a to change this tach. Steve Jameson Generally, when things go crazy electrically, it is a bad ground connection.

Do I have your attention? Let’s set the egos aside and talk some basic mechanics, hydrodynamics, physics and math, then go to work on optimizing setup. Top-end speed is the yardstick by which we usually measure a boat’s performance, but it should not be the objective. Each hull design has characteristics that limit its top end speed capabilities with a given amount of horsepower. Done properly, setup is a time consuming process. It can be expensive, and often is, if pursued to the last MPH.
The theory of optimum boat performance is relatively straightforward, but affected by many variables: A prop of “X” pitch will move the hull forward “X” inches if there is zero slip A prop MUST slip to work effectively Drag increases prop slip Hull drag is a function of wetted surface area Lower-unit drag is a function of gearcase design and engine height Aerodynamic drag is a factor, but usually a small one until speeds approach MPH Aerodynamic lift generally decreases hull drag Some of these variables can be controlled and some cannot.
Careful reworking of the blades can reduce prop slip that is directly attributable to the prop. Hull drag can be reduced by lifting more of the hull out of the water thereby reducing wetted surface , or by blueprinting the last couple of feet of the running surface.

Installation Instructions A tachometer is a good addition to any vehicle equipped with a manual transmission. Installation of the Autogage Tachometer was fairly simple with only minor wiring including a wire to the distributor, a good ground, a 12 volt switched power source and a wire to power the tach’s light. The following write-up is an overview of the installation I followed and includes a few illustrations from the installation guide provided from Autogage. To change the tach to operate on 4 or 6 cylinder engines, a pair of dip switches are located within the tach to make the adjustment.
To get to the cylinder dip switches you have to remove rear cup by placing the tachometer face down on. A phillips screw retains the cup so remove that screw located on the back.

Ever since I’ve owned my diesel Caddy, I really wished it had a tachometer. The one option that is available on later model VW diesels is the “W-terminal” alternator. This alternator has an extra terminal labeled “W” that allows an RPM-proportional signal that can drive a dash-mounted tachometer.

Origin 8 4P 4-stroke 8 and 9. The rectifier should be checked for proper operation by a trained service technician. If tachometer reads too high or too low RPM, the black rotary selector switch is not in the correct position. Changing switch positions while the engine is running will not damage the tachometer or engine. If the switch is between positions not making contact , the pointer will go to the high end of the scale.
With the engine at approximately RPM, it should read about volts AC on an outboard engine, or about volts DC on an automotive, stern drive or inboard engine. This will confirm the presence or absence of a signal at the tachometer.

A minor boat repair often includes repairing paint chips, repainting some parts of the boat, or fixing your speedometer. Fixing your speedometer is a minor repair. However, if not immediately fixed, your boat can be in for a lot more trouble than you can imagine. Locating the Speedometer Tube When checking for the cause of the malfunction, you need to locate the tube of the speedometer.
Very strange to set this thing, but great once set up. To get it set for my application, I had to do the following: Go through the config settings(1p1r, etc.) one by one; after inputting the setting, while it’s still flashing, start the engine.
History[ edit ] The first mechanical tachometers were based on measuring the centrifugal force , similar to the operation of a centrifugal governor. The inventor is assumed to be the German engineer Dietrich Uhlhorn ; he used it for measuring the speed of machines in In automobiles, trucks, tractors and aircraft[ edit ] Cessna ‘s G tachometer 1, RPM and engine hours This can assist the driver in selecting appropriate throttle and gear settings for the driving conditions.
Prolonged use at high speeds may cause inadequate lubrication , overheating exceeding capability of the cooling system , exceeding speed capability of sub-parts of the engine for example spring retracted valves thus causing excessive wear or permanent damage or failure of engines. This is more applicable to manual transmissions than to automatics. On analogue tachometers, speeds above maximum safe operating speed are typically indicated by an area of the gauge marked in red, giving rise to the expression of ” redlining ” an engine — revving the engine up to the maximum safe limit.

Add a digital hour meter to your boat’s engine to better adhere to your service schedule. Unless you have a new engine with digital display gauges, you can only “guesstimate” your running time. Because your outboard usage determines its factory recommended maintenance schedule, many engines require a 10 hour break-in followed by a dealer check-over when the motor is new, then subsequent service intervals every 50 or hours of operation thereafter.
Check your owners manual for specifics. A special LCD digital hour-meter is available that flashes its display to inform the boat operator when routine servicing is due.

I have a Cobalt with factory hp motors that was built for Paxton, the president of Cobalt. Less than hrs on engines and 2. John Smith Just purchased a Cobalt The depth finder works for seconds and then goes back to 1 foot. Any ideas on troubleshooting? Geoff Anyone know what the warning beeper means. Not the one for depth finder, one that beeps every 10 seconds or so from the engine compartment. Scott Damman The only experience I have had like this that I could not figure out at the time was when my drive oil container up front had a small leak, therfore the lube was running a bit low.
Otherwise, just make sure you check the temp gauge to make sure you are not over heating — could have a failing impeller. Sean Possibly your lower unit oil level alarm…if you boat is so equipped.
