Abstract The increasing prevalence of divorce in this country has become a major concern for social scientists. This study attempted to determine what ramifications this trend might have regarding trust for adult children of divorce. A modified version of the Dyadic Trust Scale, originally designed by Larzelere and Huston , asked questions regarding attitudes concerning the probability participants will experience successful relationships or marriage. Other specific questions were included in this study to evaluate the levels of trust between adults whose parents had divorced during childhood and adults from intact families. Survey questions measured attitudes concerning trust in friends, parents, and relationship partners. The results were evaluated to determine if parental divorce had impact on trust in adult relationships. Results also showed that participants in the study who were from divorced backgrounds had less trust towards a variety of intimate relationships.

Human health and the environment are high up the political agenda both nationally and internationally, with difficult issues such as climate change, unsustainable use of resources and obesity presenting challenges for governments and communities. Academics at UWE engage in a range of research linked to these issues and in some areas technology can play a role in finding solutions. For example new sensing technologies can be used to create improved health outcomes.

HEAT UWE will now bring experts from this Institute together with those researching in technological areas to create new collaborations. Initially we will start with a series of meetings where researchers in different disciplines can meet each other — a sort of ‘speed dating‘ for academics.

What he hadn’t anticipated was that he would meet his life partner. Lowe, then 31, fell for his year-old undergraduate student Tanya Myers. After years, the pair still live and work together and are the parents of two children. It may sound like the contrived plot of a campus novel, but Lowe’s story is not unique. Despite widespread concern about abuse of power and conflicts of interest, sexual relationships between tutor and student often flourish within academe.

He looks back on his early career at Keele University with fond memories of the relationships that began between young academics and their students. Ayer the philosopher fell into bed with everyone who was remotely willing, and an awful lot of young women were very happy to tick him off on the list of famous professors they had laid. Like their US counterparts, which have historically been stricter on campus relationships, British universities are starting to crack down on such liaisons.

Policies are being drafted to deal with relationships and the inevitable conflicts of interest that can follow – as one might put it, “an A for a lay”. Questions of morality and responsibility, sexuality and pedagogy are being raised. But however an institution chooses to tackle the problem, it’s certainly not going to disappear. As Ryan points out: But Lowe worries that today their relationship would be frowned upon. He says tough regulations against tutor-student relationships at the college would have done little to stem the flourishing romance.

The academics spent days in Mexico in and on a project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council working with victims of violence.

Home Office guidelines indicate to be granted leave to remain in the UK, individuals must not spend more than days out of the country in a month period – with an exception for anyone assisting in a humanitarian crisis. But after appealing the initial decision, the family was told on Saturday the application had been refused and they have 14 days to leave the UK. Dr Schwartz-Marin, a research fellow in the anthropology department , said: Her home is kicking her out.

Dr Schwartz-Marin and his wife, a postgraduate researcher in the geography department, spent time back in their home country working with families to build a DNA database to help track down missing people suspected to have been victims of drug or gang violence. Leslie Wagner argued, “In reality, co-operation between Israeli and British universities and their academics has grown in recent years under the energetic leadership of outgoing UK ambassador to Israel, Matthew Gould. Despite widespread international condemnation for its policy of violent repression against the Palestinian people in the Occupied Territories, the Israeli government appears impervious to moral appeals from world leaders.

Odd though it may appear, many national and European cultural and research institutions, including especially those funded from the EU and the European Science Foundation , regard Israel as a European state for the purposes of awarding grants and contracts. Would it not therefore be timely if at both national and European level a moratorium was called upon any further such support unless and until Israel abide by UN resolutions and open serious peace negotiations with the Palestinians, along the lines proposed in many peace plans including most recently that sponsored by the Saudis and the Arab League.
